Low-Calorie Cheesy Meat Lasagna

One of my favorite and go-to holiday meals is lasagna! I’ve never met anyone that doesn’t like this classic Italian dish. I make this for my husband each Christmas and he always rants and raves over it. The biggest issue with Italian dishes like lasagna is the loads of carbs and fat. I’ve been using this low-calorie recipe for years now and can’t tell a difference. Plus, I don’t get the guilt feeling after indulging!

I found this recipe from Kraft’s Healthy Living section, which by the way is AMAZING when it comes to healthier meals. Total lifesaver! A serving of this lasagna is less than 300 calories! Pair it with a salad and you’ve got a complete meal for four and leftovers! Now that’s cooking made simple!


3/4 lb. extra-lean ground beef

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 jar (24 oz.) traditional pasta sauce

1 large tomato, chopped

1 egg

1 container (16 oz.) 2% milkfat low fat cottage cheese

1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

9 lasagna noodles, cooked

1 pkg. (7 oz.) 2% milk shredded mozzarella cheese, divided


Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Don’t forget to cook your lasagna noodles as directed on the box.


Brown meat with garlic in a large saucepan. Stir in pasta sauce and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in chopped tomatoes.


Mix together egg, cottage cheese, and parmesan cheese until well-blended.


Spread 1/4 cup meat sauce on the bottom of a 13×9 baking dish. Make sure to spay the bottom. Top with layers of 3 noodles, half the cottage cheese mixture, 1/2 cup mozzarella and 1 cup sauce; repeat layers. Top with remaining noodles and sauce; cover.


Bake covered with foil for 30 minutes or until heated through.


Top with remaining mozzarella and bake uncovered for 5 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
